The Naga and Buddhism. The Naga is a familiar figure in most of south Asia—a dragon or serpent-like figure that can also take on the form of a man. It is generally a friendly spirit, dwelling beneath lakes and rivers or at the root of trees; and it will protect villages near its home.

King of the serpent (naga) realm, in Buddhist lore. Following the enlightenment of the Buddha he sat in meditation for seven weeks. During one of these weeks a storm arose and the naga king arose to shelter the Buddha with his serpent hoods.
